Day 7 | Green Pastures and Still Waters | Psalm 23:2
Green Pastures and Still Waters
Psalm 23:2
“He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.”

This second verse from the most popular psalm in the Bible – Psalm 23 – tells us more of what our Shepherd (capital S) will do for us.

As we said yesterday, sheep – the little white fluffy things – are not very smart.  And without a guide, a “shepherd,” they would not survive.

Our Heavenly Shepherd – if we will allow Him to be our Shepherd – provides ALL that we will need in this life.

Here the author of Psalm 23 – King David (remembering his time as a shepherd boy) – paints for us a mental picture of fluffy sheep being led to lie down in lush, green, yummy pastures.
WE Followers of Jesus also need to lie down in green, calm, “yummy” pastures.  Perhaps not grass (though maybe), but somewhere we can relax, and be relaxed, and shed the worries of the news and the world.  True relaxation is what I imagine here.

Then, the Shepherd leads His sheep “beside the still waters.”

You probably know that the white, fluffy sheep – especially with a full coat of wool – could drown if they got too close to the water, and it got their wool wet, and they became too heavy to move about or get out of the rushing waters.

But our Shepherd is wise and leads us beside the STILL waters.  And do we need “still waters” today or what?

I think of Ps 46:10…  “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Our SHEPHERD provides that stillness. All we have to do is relax in HIM and follow His lead.

Prayer: LORD, thank You for offering exactly what I need in times like these.  I want to follow You.  Thank You for being my Shepherd. Amen.
