40 Days of Promise
Day 6 | The Lord is my Shepherd | Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my Shepherd
Psalm 23:1
“The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

As we look at Psalm 23 this week – the most familiar Scripture in the Bible – we see a bevy of promises from God.

Here, the LORD promises to be our Shepherd.

Shepherds – at least in the Bible days – were pretty low on the socioeconomic totem pole.  They cared for sheep, but sheep, quite honestly, were then (and are today) dumb. They have little reasoning ability and will play “follow the leader” even if the leader jumps off a cliff to his death.

Throughout Scripture – and I don’t like to admit this – the LORD calls us (we people) “sheep.”  Not very flattering, but when I think about what people are doing and saying today. But, I have to admit… once again, God is RIGHT.  People are like sheep.  We appear to have little common sense, willing to follow the “herd-mentality” including jumping off the cliff to one’s inevitable demise.

But for the follower of Jesus, this psalm provides a promise.

First, it is written for those who have decided to TRUST the LORD and allow Him to call the shots.   Those who allow HIM to be our Shepherd.

Then, the promise: We will have no wants. This implies that ALL of our needs will be met by THE Shepherd, OUR Lord/Shepherd, who, like the earthly shepherds of earthly sheep, is more intelligent, wiser, and more capable of caring for us than we are ourselves.

Prayer: LORD, thank YOU for being MY Shepherd.  Thank YOU for your guidance, your provision, and your wisdom, enabling me to have my wants met completely.  Help me ALWAYS remember that You love me and care for me and want to guide and protect me.  Amen.
