PRACTICAL STEPS TO PEACEFUL LIVING

Philippians 4:8-9
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”
 (NKJV)

Our minds are constantly bombarded with headlines, opinions, and personal anxieties. In such a noisy world, Paul offers a clear set of things on which to MEDIATE: whatever things are “true… noble… just… pure… lovely… of good report… virtuous… praiseworthy.”

Truth anchors us in God’s unchanging Word, reminding us that His promises remain reliable even when circumstances wobble. Nobility and justice call us to act with integrity, seeking fairness in relationships and decisions. Purity guards the heart against corrosive influences, while loveliness invites us to appreciate beauty in creation, people, and even in small, ordinary moments. A good report encourages us to focus on what builds others up rather than tears them down. Virtuous and praiseworthy – reminds us to LOOK for things that are.

When we deliberately dwell on these qualities, we train our minds to filter out negativity and replace it with God’s “prescription.”  Paul then links this mental discipline to imitation: “the things which you learned … in me, these do,” and then the BIG promise: “And the God of peace will be with you.”

Application: Choose one of the six qualities today—perhaps “praiseworthy.” Evaluate all that you watch or listen to as to whether it is praiseworthy. Even if it’s NOT convenient, remember that the “God of peace” walks beside you when you focus properly.

Prayer: Lord, help me to fill my thoughts with what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy. May my actions reflect the example of Christ, and may Your peace accompany me as I pursue these virtues each day. Amen.
