Day 20 | BLESSED, HAPPY, FORTUNATE, TO BE ENVIED
BLESSED, HAPPY, FORTUNATE, TO BE ENVIED

Psalm 1
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

I memorized Psalm 1 out of the King James version when I was probably in junior high.   The Amplified Classic version (AMPC) of the Bible starts: “Blessed (happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable),” thus expanding the meaning of “blessed.”

But notice the teaching: Verse 1 tells us what NOT to do: “follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers” (NLT).

Then verse 2, tells us what TO do: "But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night." (AMPC)

Most people today do not “meditate” on Scripture, which means: to ponder, to think about, to consider strongly. Surveys show most regular church-going Believers don’t even open their Bibles during the week. After all, there are SO MANY other things going on.

Yet, the Psalmist was trying to inspire us to spend MORE time in God’s Word as he also shared the benefits and blessings that would come to the one who did.

My encouragement for you, dear reader, DO these three verses and see if you don’t benefit…  just as the author said.

Prayer: LORD, help remind me daily about spending more time with You and Your Word. Amen.
