Day 10 | A NEW COMMAND
A NEW COMMAND

John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

In John 13, we find the telling of the story of when Jesus gathered with his disciples for the “last supper” before His crucifixion.  Of course, the guys did NOT know this was so… to them it was just the annual Passover remembrance. But Jesus knew what was coming, and he knew that – humanly speaking – it was going to be dreadful.  “Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from me.”  (John 17) This was NOT going to be easy for Jesus… fully God but also fully human.

I wonder what any of us would have said if we were in Jesus’ position at this Passover dinner. Of course, that is ludicrous even to consider, as He was God in the flesh and we’re not.

This new command that Jesus gave was interesting. What would YOU have given as a final statement, a new command, to your followers the night before you were to be executed?

And Jesus gave them three words: “Love one another.”  But He added, (in my words) – “follow my example of loving the way I’ve loved you. Remember? Did you notice I washed your feet?”

He also added that by them loving one another – or applying today… as we love other Believers – we all show or demonstrate or prove that we are Jesus’ disciples, His followers.

Stop for a moment. WHO comes to your mind right now?  MAYBE that is the Holy Spirit putting someone on your mind to whom you need to lovingly reach out. What do you think?

Prayer: LORD, help me to increase my love of others in Your Family who, like me, are children of God. Amen.
