Day 40 | JESUS, YOU, AND OVERFLOWING JOY
JESUS, YOU, AND OVERFLOWING JOY

John 15:11
“I have told you these things so that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy may be made full and complete and overflowing.”
(NLT)

When I attended Sunday School as a kid, I didn’t think of Jesus as being joyful. As a kid, you think of Him being born in a manger, teaching parables, healing people, feeding the 5,000, dying on the cross, and, of course, rising from the dead. It must be tough being the Son of God, no permanent home, always on the move, being hated by all the Jewish leaders, but JOY, not really.

But then you grow up and read the Bible as an adult. In John 15, Jesus is teaching that “I am the vine, and you are the branches.” He shares how His Father is the vinedresser and reminds us about bearing much fruit. Frankly, it seems like another parable, but then you come to verse 11, and Jesus starts talking about His joy and His delight, and wanting that to be ours and to be made full, complete, and overflowing.

Frankly, Jesus being JOYFUL seems almost contradictory to all that I thought about Jesus as a kid, and His offer seems nearly too good to be true. Yet I’m sure everyone on the planet would rather be full of JOY than the opposite…  sad and miserable (MANY are already that); and so Jesus’ sort-of-formula is intriguing. Like many other promises in the Bible, this one seems almost too good to be true. Yet… Jesus said it, so we believe it is true.

I believe the place to start is to open your Bible to John 15 and read the entire chapter. It’s a powerhouse chapter and an absolute promise from Jesus on how you can be full of joy and MORE!

Prayer: Lord, once again, we take you at Your Word, as you never lie. Thank You for such an incredible promise, as I do want Your Joy in me and my joy to be full. Amen.
