JESUS COMFORTS
John 16:22
“You have sorrow now, but I will see you again and then you will rejoice; and no one can rob you of that joy.” (TLB)
Here's the situation: Jesus was talking to His disciples, and it was nearing the time of His trial and crucifixion.
I try to imagine Jesus – God in human flesh – facing an excruciating human execution as He takes on ALL the sins of the world… past, present, and future. He is preparing to pay the price, to be the Sacrifice for our redemption by His death on the cross and the shedding of His blood.
And yet, with all that is on His mind and heart, He is comforting His followers who are in a state of near panic. They've just had the "last supper" and communion (John 13), then Jesus tells them that HE is the way the truth and the life (John 14), that He is the vine and "I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and that your joy might be full." (John 15:11).
Then, Jesus continues to teach and comfort them by again assuring them that He will SEE them again and that their JOY will be something no one can take away from them.
It's just like our LORD. He is the One facing the unimaginable, yet because of His great love, He takes the time to talk to and comfort His followers, then and now.
Isn't that also what a good parent does for their frightened child with a bad dream in the middle of the night? Out of love, they comfort and reassure their child that all is well.
Our Lord loves YOU too. Don't let anyone steal your joy.
Prayer: LORD God, I am rejoicing in You and all You do and have done for me. Amen.
