GRACE IN MARRIAGE

1 Peter 3:7
“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”

In my church, I have several people who have had LONG marriages. The longest is a couple who are going on 75 years of marriage… Wow! But as I talk to all these folks, I sense they are not special or privileged or lucky. They’re just two people who got married and then learned how to truly love one another. Extraordinary, agape-type love can usually be seen, and includes healthy doses of GRACE sprinkled liberally to help grow this marriage into something that beats the odds.

In 1990 Pew Research found that, of American adults ages 25-54, 67% were married, 29% unpartnered and 4% cohabited. In 2019, those numbers were 53% married, 38% unpartnered and 9% cohabiting. Also, over 1 in 5 adults don’t want children.

Back to today’s verse... it shows a KEY to a happy life as married is: GRACE. Maybe the lack of it is one of the reasons many people retreat from getting married.

I like this definition of God’s GRACE: God giving us what we don’t deserve.  The other side of that coin is MERCY: God withholding from us what we do deserve.

Aren’t you glad that our LORD offers you both GRACE and MERCY?

In today’s verse, the Apostle Peter is teaching married couples – and particularly husbands here — to be understanding and give honor to their wives (remembering that they too are heirs together of eternal life via God’s grace).

I would also add that it is an essential verse to follow if you wish to be married for 75 years!

Prayer: LORD, help me add all the grace and mercy that I can – with Your help – to my marriage, relationships, family, church, and friends. Amen.
