Day  38 | TO TELL THE TRUTH
TO TELL THE TRUTH

Prov 12:2, 22
“The LORD approves of those who are good, but he condemns those who plan
wickedness.”
“The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.”

Years ago, there began a gameshow on TV called “To Tell the Truth,” in which the panelists were trying to figure out which person being interviewed was in fact telling the truth. The winners were those who could tell the most convincing lies. It was (and apparently still is) a fun game.

But in real life, “lying lips” are DETESTED by the Lord.  That’s a strong word which is defined as “strongly dislike.”  Thus, the Lord “strongly dislikes” lying lips.

It got me wondering, where do lies come from? What’s their origin? Why is lying so common?

Verse 2 from Proverbs 12 says that the Lord “condemns those who PLAN wickedness.”

Now – I could go off on a discussion about the planned wickedness and destruction we’re seeing in America today – but instead I’ll focus on the PLANNING of wickedness which combined with verse 22 includes LYING.

Although often a person will lie and then – when caught – admit that he or she didn’t PLAN to say this or that, “it just came out.”

Really? No planning, not even a little?

You see, lying is a SIN.  That’s a word we don’t like to hear or read, but it is what it is. And when someone tries to be let off the hook for sinning (including lying) by saying: “I didn’t mean for that to happen” or “I didn’t plan to tell a lie,” they’re not being fully truthful.

You see, we PLAN to do wickedness when we DON’T PLAN to walk upright.

Flip Wilson used to have a TV program in which he would say – in a comedic role – “the devil made me do it.”  Yes, Eve was tempted by the serpent, but she CHOSE to follow his lead. There was something inside of her that resonated with the serpent’s suggestion to disobey God, and she said “YES” to the impulse.

I can remember teaching school and hearing my high school students LIE to me when they weren’t prepared for class.  It’s common… but it’s not of God.  He DELIGHTS in those who tell the truth (and who walk uprightly).

Prayer: Lord, help me to keep a watch on my tongue.  Help me to watch how I walk.  Help me to distinguish YOUR voice from that of the Enemy.  I want your approval and delight. Help me to walk and talk in ways that please You.  Amen.
