Day  25 | PRACTICING THE TRUTH
PRACTICING THE TRUTH

1 John 1:6
“If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”

The Apostle John, now in his old age, was very concerned about how his spiritual children were living.  He had walked with the Lord Jesus during those 3+ years of ministry.  He had heard Him speak. Seen the miracles. Watched the crowds.  Learned about His Father.

John had learned directly from Jesus what it meant when Jesus said, “Follow me.”

Today, as then, there are people who “claim” to be “Christians” and yet – as they did in John’s day – “walk in darkness.”

This verse from NLT: “So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.”

John teaches here that it IS possible to “claim” to be a Christian, while not actually being one.

“Walk in darkness”
or “living in spiritual darkness” does not mean an occasional lapse in Christian living but, rather, indicates a pattern of living.  Thus one who claims to be in fellowship with God and yet walks in darkness is lying and probably deceiving even himself.

In 2004, the governor of the state of New Jersey was caught in a scandal. Though he was a married man with children, he was also having a sexual relationship with another man.  At the press conference he held to admit this, he began by saying: “My truth is that I am a gay American.” Those were very carefully chosen words: "My truth."

In the thinking of the world then – and now – I can have MY truth, and you can have YOUR truth. But Jesus said, “I am the way, THE TRUTH and the life.” (John 14:6).  Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, is THE TRUTH, the supreme truth, the unchanging truth and a truth NOT subject to a popularity vote or how people feel.  Jesus Christ is “True North” for His true Followers.

Prayer: Lord, help me to LIVE in a way that is pleasing to You.  Help me to spend time with you every day so that I may learn the truth, draw near and become all and do all that You have planned for me.  Amen.
